In the process of oil field workover, the up shackle of the string is the key link in the workover operation.

There are two main types of upper shackle equipment in the operation site, one is the traditional manual operation suspension workover power used in large area.

Hydraulic pliers, another type of iron driller for automatic test application of upper shackle. When manually operated hydraulic pliers shackle the drill pipe during workover, the torque of drill pipe thread becomes larger due to some special workover techniques, which may lead to the problem that the hydraulic pliers cannot unhook the drill pipe due to insufficient output torque.

Meanwhile, manual operation of hydraulic pliers is of great labor intensity and great risk of personal injury.

In recent years, drilling automation equipment has been introduced into the workover operation of the oil field to carry out field tests. However, due to its structure and function for the development of drill pipe thread, there are some problems such as low efficiency and easy deformation of the pipe body when the tubing is shackled during workover operation.

To address the issues like great labor intensity, harsh operation environment, and high operation risk during tubing string tripping due to low level of mechanization, the tubing centralizing device has been designed and developed. The device consists of wellhead bracket, the hydraulic cylinder for centralizing, guide conical barrel, assisting centralizing arm, main centralizing arm and mechanical handler assembly.

The device driven by hydraulic cylinder could reduce the swings of the lifting tubing by tubing centralizing.

Precise tubing centralizing ensures the smooth of the tubing connection alignment and makeup.

Static stress analysis results show that the designed device could meet the centralizing and alignment requirement of maximum ø114.3 mm (4-1/2 in) tubing.

Field application results showed that the device could well coordinate the wellhead device and tubing transmitting equipment, resulting in mechanized tubing tripping workover operation without human intervention, meeting the requirements for field application.

The tubing centralizing device for automatic workover operations is composed of a main centralizing arm, an auxiliary centralizing arm, a hydraulic cylinder, a centralizing device, and a centralizing barrel, as shown in Figure 1. The main centralizing arm is hinged with the wellhead support, and the upper end of the main centralizing arm is equipped with a mechanical handrail, which can be moved back and forth with the hydraulic cylinder of the handrail. The auxiliary centralizing arm is a four-bar linkage mechanism, the main rod is hinged with the main centralizing arm, the lower side is hinged with the bracket, and the four-bar linkage mechanism swings with the main centralizing arm. The top of the guide cone is in the shape of a bell mouth, which is fixed on the bottom plate on the support rail, and the hydraulic clamp is aligned with the center of the guide cone. In the process of lowering the tubing, the guiding cone further limits the freedom of the tubing and enables precise centering of the tubing.
